Forging skill allows creatures to contribute to construction of items at a Forge.
Like all crafting skills, higher values add more to completion per turn-worked, but don’t directly affect the quality of the finished item. (It’s safe to have lower-skill crafters help out!)
The Legendary threshold is 45 or 50. Crafters with total skill at this level can work on projects using body parts (such as dragon scale armor) or incorporating glyphs. Master Artisans have legendary Forging skill, as do Dwarven Blacksmiths.
